We had a great time at our first club meeting at Cellar 13 in Carefree. It was hard to recognize everyone AFTER a shower and out of running/workout clothes!

First Morning Track Workout

Very nice morning on our first track workout at Cactus Shadows High School. It's quite pretty because you get a nice view of Black Mountain. I forgot my camera but I have a reminder set up to put it in my car for next Thursday.

I think we all enjoyed the change of pace. This morning Bridget, Tamara, Kim, Christina, Jamee and I (e) did a couple laps warm up (half mile) and then did 400 meter repeats (a fast lap and then a recovery lap x 4 times). Then we did a half mile or more for a cool down. I polled everyone afterwards and they all agreed they would like to continue a track run on Thursdays for the Summer.

Since this is going to be a regular gig, I'm going to do some research and offer up different track workouts for beginner and intermediate prior to the next track run. As we progress with training for events, I'll work on a stamina building advanced workouts. There's a ton of resources for this and many correlate with tempo runs on my marathon training session. I'd also like to see if we can't get a couple coached sessions with a local coach that could talk about running form and provide tips on how we can build speed and run more efficiently for better endurance.

If you overslept and missed the workout this morning (Syndie) or couldn't make it—you will have an opportunity to try a track morning next Thursday. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as we did!

It's THAT Time Again...

It's kind of a cruel joke that the hottest days of the summer are in front of me and it's now time to start week 24 of marathon training. Yikes! I've crowded the club calendar with TMT dates (Tucson Marathon Training) just in case other RC3 chicks want to join me on a training run (or better yet in the marathon). Kim has also made the calendar more impressive by adding T1/2M (Tucson Half Marathon) training dates.

I'm a combination of nervous and excited about the challenge ahead of me in training for my second Tucson marathon. Last year my goal was to finish. This year I'm hoping for a PR. In order to do that, I've decided to try a different training schedule. I've opted for the Hal Higdon Novice 3 schedule which puts my training into 3 days during the week with an earlier start date (by 4 weeks). I end up doing three 20+ milers. That should toughen up my mental fortitude for sure!

As I filled in our club calendar today with marathon training runs, I thought about "Firsts". Admittedly, my first thought was that I felt queazy after visually documenting how many freaking super long runs I have coming and how I only have one more week to slack off. However, I've come to enjoy that feeling of having something to organize and prepare for. There was a first time for that and a realization that it wouldn't be my last. That's what got me thinking about FIRSTs...

For instance:
  • This year Kira, Lydia & Syndie will do their FIRST half marathon (PF Chang's)
  • Jodi will do her FIRST full marathon at the Tucson Marathon. If she runs her marathon like she does her half marthons—she will get her FIRST Boston Marathon qualifying time in her FIRST marathon!
  • Kim will do her second half marathon but her FIRST one in Tucson
  • Many of our members are running or run/walking on a regular basis for the FIRST time.
  • It's the FIRST time I ("e") am participating in a running event (Tucson Marathon) with the intention of getting a PR (I'm usually in it for the t-shirt!).
  • Although they may not realize it yet— many of our RC3 chicks will run their FIRST 5k or 10k.
  • We will probably have our FIRST track work out in the next week or two.
  • We're having our FIRST club meeting next week. It may be the FIRST time we will meet up without running clothes and bed head!
I'm sure the list of "Firsts" will grow as we go through our first year of organizing our club. But what I like about "Firsts" is that they almost always leads to seconds, thirds and so on.

Hi Chicks,
I have returned from our Disneyland vacation. We had a great time. Despite burning major calories while trekking trough the parks, sometimes with a 63 pound kid on my back, I missed the workouts and runs with all of you.

Yesterday morning as we sat in front of the hotel for our shuttle, my husband pointed out a race that was rounding the corner. I was a bit envious! Who would have ever thought I’d say that!

I hope you all had a great run either Saturday or Sunday. I can’t wait for the club happy hour/group photo shoot!

Blog Updates Coming Soon

We're on the verge of a new club logo... We're voting and it's too close to call at the moment. However, I can tell you that when we do decide, the blog will be sporting the new logo and new colors to match.

RC3 Virtual Chick in Michigan High School State Meet

I spent last Saturday in Michigan cheering Kayla on in the 800 meter race for the division 3 state finals. Kayla is a sophomore at Leslie High School. That alone is a pretty great accomplishment as most of the runners are juniors and seniors. She placed 4th in her heat and 14th overall. Her time was 2:26 and she made second team all-state.  I have a feeling she has a few more inches to grow and if her legs get any longer, her competition next year will be VERY afraid! Good job Kayla!

Everyone finds it tough sometimes to get motivated to stay fit. I definitely have been in a bit of a funk and I said that I would run the Tucson Marathon out loud which obviously means I need to make good on that. Yikes:-)! Anyway...I then got on the blog and saw two new campers at the Spur Cross Sunday run and I felt again inspired. Thank you for getting me to the gym this morning.!
I will be there this Sunday since we are having to meet in the wee hours again due to the heat. I know Crazy E will not let me bow out of the year's full in Tucson. Drag me there if you have to because this is a goal I must accomplish!
